TikTok Offers Viewers Control to Limit Artificial Intelligence-Made Media in Their Feeds

TikTok is introducing a updated setting that permits them to lessen the volume of AI-made media appearing in their timelines. This step comes as the platform revealed that it now features over 1 bn content made with AI.

Pilot Phase and Launch

This change is being tested over the coming weeks before a widespread release. This shift aligns with a rise in AI content, fueled by recent AI video creators.

AI Proliferation Online

It has been noted that nearly a tenth of the most rapidly expanding video streams on a popular video site only show clips produced artificially. A large amount of this output is classified as mass-produced AI material, a phrase for substandard, mass-produced content that is frequently illogical or surreal.

Based on user feedback that numerous viewers enjoy content made with AI tools, including computer-generated images to science explainers, and we intend to offer the community the power to adjust the amount of that, depending on their own choices,” stated a spokesperson.

AI on the Platform

TikTok shared that there are presently over a billion videos on its app tagged as artificially created. In total, more than 100 million pieces of content are submitted to the platform each day, making AI content a relatively small percentage of its total content library.

How to Adjust Settings

Viewers will be able to reduce or increase the level of artificial media they see by opening the “manage topic” feature in the platform and selecting “AI-generated content”. Other topics that currently be modified under the setting cover news, style, aesthetics, and dance.

Platform Guidelines

Its rules require creators to identify lifelike AI-made content, and it forbids malicious AI impersonations of celebrities or crisis events. Any believable AI video that is not labeled can be removed under its community policies.

In addition, the platform will now apply an artificially created tag to content created with its built-in AI features, or identified by an cross-platform project for recognizing AI-generated material. This measure is intended to help prevent users from attempting to bypass the labeling process.

Educational Initiatives

The platform is also launching a $2m awareness program for experts and groups to create educational content about ethical AI use. This project will support charitable organizations focused on educating programming and robotics.

Content Safety Approach

The platform has justified its content review process, amid controversy over intentions to cut jobs for hundreds of review team members in Britain. TikTok is expected to cut 439 jobs in its user protection team in its British office, with labor groups and internet security professionals voicing alarm that staff are being displaced by automated systems.

A trust and safety lead clarified that human moderation would still have a role, but artificial intelligence can shield workers by eliminating the most distressing content ahead of it is viewed by staff. The company stated a notable drop in disturbing and violent content seen by human moderators over the past year due to the use of its AI tools.

We believe it is crucial to integrate people and machines to keep the platform safe,” the official commented. “We’ll have staff as involved in the system, but we also think it’s highly necessary to limit contact with harmful content as swiftly, which is the area in which a lot of the machine support is really helping us work at speed.”
